Widgets are the wonderful componets of a wordpress blog. See some  widgets below:

All the components that appear in the right most side of the above picture are widgets. i.e Sponsors, Counter, SMS Alerts, Facebook likebox, Photos in 3D etc.

Lets look how these widgets are added.

Take your Dashboard. Goto Appearance-> Widgets

1

In the widgets page, you can see Available widgets such as Archieves, Calendar, Categories, Links etc. Also you can see  Sidebar 1. Sidebar 1 represents the sidebar or the widgets column of your blog. At present, there are no widgets in your sidebar(sidebar 1). Widgets can be added by the drag and drop method. Just drag one widget from available widgets to the sidebar.

3

Drop the Calendar widget in to the sidebar. See your blog, a calendar will appear as shown below:

4

Widgets can be text also. There is an available widget called Text. Drop it into your sidebar and check its working as shown below:

5

6

Text widget can be used to write HTML code also.

For example, to show Google Friend Connect, you can either install Google Friend Connect plugin which will result in a new available widget or you can paste the HTML code of Google Friend Connect in the Text widget. Both will give you the same result as showm below. But in case of plugin install, you will have to adjust some settings for the widget.

HTML code can be pasted in the Text widget as shown in picture below:
