All about WordPress Plugins
Before preparing this post, i searched the word definition of Plugin in Wikipedia. Listen to the definition of Plugin, “ In computing, a plug-in is a set of software components that adds specific capabilities to a larger software application. If supported, plug-ins enable customizing the functionality of an application. For example, plug-ins are commonly used in web browsers to play video, scan for viruses, and display new file types.”
In WordPress, a plugin is used to carry out a specific functionality. A number of plugins are availiable which allows users and developers to extend the functionality of the website beyond the features that come as part of the base install. You will understand more in the course of time.
Now, let us look into the installed plugins. Goto Plugins –> Installed, to view the installed plugins.
To add a new plugin, goto the Add New.
There is a search option with which you can search for plugins and install them.
Another option is to upload plugins and then install them as we uploaded and installed themes.
Its easy to search and install. So let us see how to do it.
Have you heard of SEO ( Search Engine Optimization) ?
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site or a webpage (such as a blog) from search engines via “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results as opposed to other forms of search engine marketing (“SEM”) which may deal with paid inclusion.
In WordPress we have a plugin called SEO. Let us see how to install it.
In the search box, type the name of the plugin you want to install and click ‘Search Plugins’.
The search result will be as shown below:
Let us choose the first result. On the rightmost side, you can see ‘install’ option. Click install.
This will open up an install window as shown in picture below. Click on Install Now.
When the plugin is successfully installed, click ‘Activate Plugin’.
Once the plugin is activated, you get a page as shown below:
You can see a message in red box. It says to configure the SEO plugin.
To configure the SEO plugin goto Settings-> All in one SEO
(This All in one SEO option in settings came after insatlling the SEO plugin)
The plugin status is disabled by default. So first enable it.
After enabling, Click Save changes.
Thus your SEO plugin is installed. Now take new post or edit post, scroll down to see an SEO box.
Fill the title, desciption and keywords related to the post, So that your post will appear in Search results when that keyword is searched.
